Hey guys, what’s up welcome back to Hear & Now podcast!
I’m so happy you decided to join me back for another episode this week. This one is going to be a much-needed episode not just for you but for me as well because it is finals season.
I’m gonna give you practical tips for how to study and prepare for finals season.
Let’s be honest this finals season is not at all what we expected. For me, and I’m sure for a lot of you as well, you get to take your finals from the comfort of your own home. But, that still means we gotta kick it into gear and get ready!!
So here are some practical tips for you to conquer and crush finals season!
- PLAN AHEAD! This is so important! Make sure you outline everything you need to get done ahead of time so that you are aware of what is due when. I am posting a bunch of resources and PDF’s below for you guys. I’m calling it my Finals Survival Guide. I have a bunch of free worksheets and planning printables!
- CREATE A STUDY PLAN! This seems kinda tedious, but let me explain. Depending on when your finals are, back track and plan what you are going to study and when. I found this great site that explains study planning, so let me read what she says.. • One month before finals: Create your study pans, starting with your syllabi. Begin studying using your study plan; you should be working on the first quarter of the semester material.
- Three weeks before finals: Study using your study plans, should be working on the second quarter of the semester material.
- Two weeks before finals: Study using your study plans, should be working on the third quarter of the semester material.
- One week before finals: Study using your study plans, should be working on the forth quarter of the semester material.
- Three days before finals: Create and complete practice problems and questions using practice exams or old homework problems.
Night before finals: Review your notes one more time and ensure you have a full night’s sleep after a healthy dinner.
Day of finals: Take one last look at your class material and beat those pre-exam jitters with some stress management techniques.
I thought this was a great way to explain it! Okay, so speaking of syllabi, let’s move onto number 3.
- USE YOUR SYLLABUS! Your professors gave this to you for a reason. Use this as an outline for what you need to study. This can also be a guideline what you learned. I mean come on, do you really remember what you learned back in the first week? This way you can find your readings and homework assignments with ease.
- SET UP YOUR STUDY SPACE AND GET GOOD MATERIALS! One thing I have a slight obsession with is study stuff. I used to follow this Tumblr board that was solely dedicated to pretty pictures of study places and people’s notes. But, it’s so helpful to rewrite your notes and make them pretty! Review all those notes you took and make them pretty. It’s helpful for you because you are rewriting them and it helps with memorization!
- TAKE BREAKS! You might be thinking, what? I need to cram, no times for breaks. In the words of Dwight Shrute, “false”. Taking breaks is actually more effective because your brain can only focus for an average of 30-60 minutes. I can totally see that being true for myself. After that 30-60 minutes, I get restless and can’t retain information as well. There is a method that I learned a while ago and that is the Pomodoro method! The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method where you work for 25 minutes, then take a 5 minute break. After you have repeated this four times, you take a 20 to 30 minute break. Pretty easy right? Try it out to see if it works for you! I have found that the best way to do this is to use a timer – you can get the Pomodoro app to try it out! And speaking of taking breaks, some ideas include: working out, decluttering a space, reading a fun book, doing the laundry, eating, taking a shower, doing a face mask or skin care etc.. oh and speaking of which I just wanted to throw this in here… I just recently started using Luminance skincare and oh my goodness my skin is doing amazing. Their products are all natural, organic, vegan, cruelty-free, non-synthetic! #win! And! I got two codes for you to use – the first one is code NONTOXIC if you want to get a sample kit, or if you want to jump right in and buy them, you can use code sophialebano for 15% off your first order!Make sure you check that out, link below!
- But anyway, make sure you take breaks to clear your brain and make room for all the necessary information.
