Hey guys, what’s up? Welcome back to hear and now Podcast. I am back with another episode this week and today’s episode we’re talking about how to manage overwhelming thoughts and feelings. I think

1:00
This is a very needed topic right now.

1:06
The world’s kind of just off kilter. And I’ve always I mean, I’m sure you’ve seen them too is that like, this means about Welcome to level six of Jumanji, it feels like that it’s just like what’s coming next. But the best thing we can do is learn how to manage our overwhelming thoughts and feelings and

1:26
refocus our energy so that we’re not looking in the wrong places. So that’s what this episode is going to be about. I’m going to give you some practical tips for how to manage your anxiety and overwhelming thoughts.

1:45
So let’s just get right in and start with tip number one, which is praying. And obviously you guys know me I have to have some sort of theological aspect every episode

1:58
so

2:00
Prayer.

2:02
If you’re like me, sometimes when you’re overwhelmed, you kind of just put praying to the backburner, and you’re like, I need to keep it in this world. Like I need to say like, my practical things, making a list or doing breathing exercises or whatever.

2:19
But out of all these tips that I’m going to give you, prayers, the one that’s going to give you the most peace, about what you’re doing.

2:35
It might not necessarily feel like that in the moment. But over time, you’re going to start to see yourself becoming more at peace and having a little bit more of a solid like foundation within yourself.

2:51
If you start to incorporate prayer, into those moments when you feel overwhelmed, so

2:58
for me

3:00
And I talked about this before, it can be as simple as saying, like God helped me to get through this day or something. It doesn’t have to be Get on your knees and say an elaborate prayer. It can just be as you’re doing your tasks, like, please help me to focus. Please help me to stay in the game today.

3:20
Please help me to manage my overwhelming thoughts and feelings,

3:24
and all that stuff. And it’s your personal relationship with God. There’s no right or wrong way to pray, or, I’m not here to tell you like you have to say this or do this, to manage your overwhelm. God kind of just wants you to spend time with him. And just to listen to what

3:42
he has to say to you, and maybe he doesn’t have to say anything to you. Maybe he knows that you’ve got this on your own. He just needs you to come to him and admit that you need help, and you need him to guide you. So

3:57
I’m going to give you a little prayer that you can say

4:01
For when you need to manage, overwhelm.

4:11
too much to bear. I depend on you, Lord and trust your precious care. That’s so cute. And it’s just like a little reminder to pray throughout the day

4:23
to ask God to help you and guide you, wherever you need to. And the other thing I was going to say is that you don’t necessarily have to sit and pray. You can turn on some worship music and I’ll leave a link down in the

4:38
Show Notes to my worship playlist that I have

4:43
because even singing and

4:47
listening to music

4:49
That makes you feel uplifted and calm and kind of recenter your your mind and stuff. worship music always does that for me.

4:57
If you really intently listen to the lyrics and sing along with them, that’s a form of prayer.

5:03
In itself,

5:05
so I always talk about like my favorite by Matt Maher and

5:09
Lauren Daigle

5:11
and again, I’ll leave a link to my playlist down below, but it’s just really centering yourself and focusing on what really is good at

5:20
in the world. So that’s tip number one. Tip number two is a little bit more gentle.

5:27
goal but that’s making a list.

5:30
Again, if you know me, you know that I like to make lists because I’m very much a three on the enneagram scale

5:38
but just

5:39
writing down your thoughts which kind of goes with point number three being doing a brain dump.

5:46
If you’ve never heard of a brain dump is essentially just saying

5:49
A piece of paper and literally dumping what you have in your brain onto a piece of paper.

5:55
It’s actually very common to like look at all of your thoughts on the spot because if you’re lucky

6:01
Me, you get into your head too much because you’re kind of like searching for the open tabs in your brain. And you’re trying to figure out how to close each of them. And so if you get them

6:11
Onto piece of papers you can like, see what it is that is swimming around in your brain. And that’s a really, really great way to kind of manage what you’re doing and prioritizing which of those things you want to get done first

6:28
and some of those things might not even be

6:31
Like tasks, you might just be like, I’m very overwhelmed about this. Look what’s going on in the world, which is where Tip number four comes in.

6:41
journaling.

6:43
journaling is very important and I wrote a blog post on it a couple weeks ago. I believe it was May 20.

6:52
I’ll leave. I’ll leave a link to it. But it was the importance of journaling and

7:04
I journaled for five years straight. I’m pretty much not missing anything.

7:10
Because it was kind of a way for me to just get my thoughts out at the end of a long day.

7:16
Can you just recap what happened?

7:25
And now like when I look back on those journals like it’s kind of fun to see

7:30
What I went through and like what my days were like

7:34
And that way down the road, I can show my kids my journals and be like, Hey, this is what

7:39
You know, my year looks like this is what it was like to be in middle school and high school and especially now when it

7:49
We have to write a record for the history books

7:53
and say this is what time

7:55
20 was like, as insane as it was.

7:59
So if it’s if you’re feeling overwhelmed with something that’s not practical like school assignments or whatever

8:05
And you kind of just need somewhere to direct your thoughts I’d recommend taking up journaling

8:10
There’s a great app called dive through

8:14
I worked with them on a blog post and Instagram post a couple weeks ago and their app is amazing because it’s guided

8:23
journaling and meditation and mindfulness into

8:28
There’s different prompts that you can listen to

8:31
Whereas like if you’re managing your Coronavirus

8:34
anxiety or something, and really it’s just like

8:37
A person talking to you, reminding you to breathe

8:47
You

8:48
prompts on what you can write in your journal. Maybe you’re stressed about finding a job or something and you need to

8:55
Somebody’s to kind of talk you through it. This app is awesome and

9:00
Because of Coronavirus, they’ve made it free. So if you want to check it out, it’s called dive through.

9:08
Again, I’ll leave a link down below for you guys to check it out. Or you can you know click into the blog post and find it there.

9:15
But

9:16
journaling is a really, really great way to just get your thoughts out

9:22
and leave them on paper, because I kind of feel like once you write something down

9:27
On paper, Like you’re done with it and like, you’ve got the thought out, and you’ve managed that part of your overwhelm. Um,

9:37
speaking of guided through, they talked about breathing

9:40
A lot which is what I wanted to say is my next point

9:44
is

9:46
breathing is super important. And I never really realized the impact of breathing until I started paying attention to my own and

10:02
Throughout the day, a lot of us are just not even focused on our breathing. And if we start to get overwhelmed then you know our heart rate starts to get up in our breathing cycles are interrupted

10:15
In, it just causes a whole mess of nerves within your body. So sometimes you need to remind yourself to stop and breathe.

10:23
And focus on your breathing.

10:25
You know you can do it in for four alpha four and you can repeat it and it starts to slow down. I believe it’s your parasympathetic nervous system.

10:35
Don’t

10:36
You know, come at me if I get that wrong.

10:39
But anyway, starting to slow down your system so that you can focus your energy where it leads to rather than giving in to all the anxiety that you’ve got going on. So

10:50
sometimes I need to take my own advice on that one.

10:53
But

10:55
breathing is super important, and it’s often very necessary for all of us. So I’d recommend you trying to do it.

11:03
And even if you’re not telling everyone just get into the habit of focusing on your breathing and practicing that over and over

11:10
Then

11:16
the next tip I have is kind of a quote. It says yesterday

11:21
History tomorrow’s a mystery. Today is a gift so we have to focus on the moment

11:27
the present

11:29
Today is a gift.

11:32
We have to learn to make to

11:34
Fun and even if we’re kind of searching around for the light

11:39
Looking for the, you know, fun things that are going on. You can make

11:44
things fun

11:47
whenever I had like a big assignment to

11:51
Viewers that exam to study for

11:56
give myself like incentives and kind of tried to get fun.

12:02
Where I remember I think it was my brother when we were

12:05
I’m in like middle school or elementary school and we had like a spelling test or something like we will go outside and

12:12
play basketball and try and spell the words and give the definitions and stuff

12:19
And if you’re

12:21
like some people I know kinesthetic learners tend to be the ones that need to move around and

12:29
That’s how they learn.

12:31
And so anyway balance is so fun little tidbit there. But essentially make it fun. Put on some good music, get your work done. It really motivates you and kind of like makes you forget it.

12:44
About the overwhelm that you have in your brain

12:48
which is totally necessary.

12:56
So yeah, try and make it good fun. And the last tip I have for you today is structuring your day.

13:03
And I talked about this literally all the time, but it’s block scheduling. And you guys

13:08
can check out the video that I have that I did on that from back in I believe it was March honestly and I have a free printable for block scheduling

13:21
You can learn to structure your day that way

13:25
and make it so that it doesn’t seem so

13:29
alarming and daunting at times.

13:32
But yeah, that’s really

13:35
All I have

13:36
for you guys today. Just a couple of tips

13:40
Managing Your overwhelming thoughts and feelings.

13:44
It’s a hard one for a lot of us and I know a lot of us are struggling with it right now.

13:52
So, without further ado, I’m going to close out this episode but before I forget, just a couple things. First thing is on July 1, don’t forget to mark your calendar

14:03
