The Importance of Journaling and Reflecting

Do you journal?

I’ve been on and off about journaling for years. If you’re like most people, you probably start journaling for a few days and then forget about because life gets busy and journaling is at the bottom of your to-do list.

yup. I get it.

Being an enneagram 3, when I make a goal, I like to stick with it.

I never actually planned on journaling, to be honest.

But, on Easter Day 2013, I was gifted the most beautiful journal ever.

So, that night I decided that I would reflect on my day and keep a record of each day after that.

5 years and 7 journals later, I was proud to say that I kept my goal.

But… life happens. I forgot to journal one day, then another, and then another. Slowly but surely, I went a really long while without journaling. And guess what? My emotions were all over the freaking place.

When I was having a particularly emotional night, I decided to put that empty journal that laid on my desk to use. And boy oh boy, does it feel good to journal again.

It feels dang cool to reflect on my day at night. I always include a little prayer at the end to thank God for my day and pray for the next one.

And most especially, I love that I get to look back on all my years and remember who I am and who I was meant to be.

My mom is one of the most avid journal keepers I’ve ever met. To be honest, I used to think it was strange that she wanted to keep such a detailed record of her days and thoughts.

But, when she is able to recount a specific feeling or emotion of the present day to one she experienced 5 years ago, it reminds me that we are all still the same people inside and it’s okay to have changes in emotions.

I can’t wait to share my journals with my children some day to tell them that it’s okay to feel all the feelings. This will especially be relevant to recount all the feelings we have experienced while living through a global pandemic.

That’s why I am so thankful I found DiveThru. DiveThru is a guided journaling app developed by mental health professionals, in order to help you take charge of your mental wellbeing.
