50 Lenten Sacrifice Ideas

Lent only began a few days ago, but it’s not too late to think about what you want to give up for Lent. Lent is supposed to be a difficult time. It’s a period of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. People tend to go for the “easier-hard” things, like giving up sweets or tv. Now I am going to give you ideas of what you can give up or do for lent. I’ve never been a fan of “giving things” up, but rather, adding things in. Lent is about sacrifice and bringing yourself closer to God. So, without further ado, here is a list of things you give up or can do as your Lenten sacrifice. 

  1. Read a chapter of the Bible everyday
  2. Limit your screen time to an hour a day
  3. Cook instead of eating out
  4. Go on a spending ban/limit
  5. Give up social media (basic, I know)
  6. Give up Snacking between meals
  7. Give up Sugar
  8. Show more mercy
  9. Give up complaining
  10. Give up sarcasm (this one is hard)
  11. Drink more water 
  12. Bless your family everyday
  13. Pray for those who have hurt you
  14. Pray for the souls in purgatory everyday
  15. Spend one hour with God
  16. Listen to spiritual music
  17. Give up secular music
  18. Do an extra chore
  19. Stop being so hard on yourself
  20. Stop lying
  21. Stop saying yes to everything. 
  22. Plan ahead – God gave us the gift of time!
  23. Stop hiding your faith. 
  24. Give worrying up to God. 
  25. Stop stressing (Obviously this is easier said than done)
  26. Give up meat all of Lent.
  27. Give up your favorite food
  28. Give up the word “hate”
  29. Say bye to jealousy
  30. Write in your journal
  31. Thank God everyday
  32. Practice gratitude
  33. Stop eating fast food
  34. No more procrastinating (again, easier said than done)
  35. Partake in a Lenten photo challenge
  36. Ask your followers how you can pray for them
  37. Pray and read about one station of the cross each day. 
  38. Choose a word to focus on throughout lent
  39. Give up wearing makeup for all of Lent
  40. Try to be 5 minutes early everywhere you go
  41. Take 10 minutes a day for self-care
  42. Pray the rosary everyday
  43. Say “Jesus I trust in you” 500 times/day (this one is hard)
  44. Listen to the Pray as you Go app everyday
  45. Donate $1 to $5 a day to your favorite charity
  46. Give up cursing
  47. Fast from alcohol
  48. Try to get to mass every Sunday
  49. Love your neighbor as yourself
  50. Remember you are created in God’s image and likeness. Surrender yourself to Him.
